Fiddle Full

My cat has string stuck in her claws which, unable to get it out?

I poor cat has string really stuck in his claws and I can't get it out, I think its twisted around it and its hurting him becuase hes not putting his full weight on that leg. I tried cutting it but if I fiddle around with it toolong he bikes me. What can I do? I can't affort the vets till nect week and I'm don't like him in pain. Plase need some advice?

Nail clippers are easier to wield than scissors and will not spook you cat as he won't be able to see the blades.

Do it tonight, don't wait as there may be problems caused by tight string that could result in serious injury (or possibly amputation).

Wrap him gently in a fluffy towel so just his head and the affected paw are outside. Sit down on the end of the couch and jam his bottom into a corner so he can't wriggle away. Speak softly but firmly and make sure he's pinned down (not so hard as to crush him or stop his breathing, mind!)

Be firm, let him know from the start that you are going to finish this whatever he thinks about it (and try your best to believe it!).

Now take his paw in your left hand (assuming you are right handed) and squeeze the affected claws one by one, clipping away at the string everywhere you can see it with the clippers in your right hand.
It may be easier if you hold him and get someone else to clip away.
One lucky snip will probably allow you to unravel the rest.

Once the string is off, check for any abrasions or bleeding. Let him go, give him a foody treat then leave him overnight. If he's still limping tomorrow, he may still need the vet's help as he may have damaged some muscle tissue or bone (after all you don't know how he got ensnared in the string he could have been tugging at it for hours attached to a fence or something and really hurt himself).

At least you will have made sure the blood can circulate properly and may save him from something as horrible as gangreen.
